Sometimes things happen and I don’t know what to do with my face...

8 great things in the world of writing this week:

  1. Nerd Word of the Week: Deliquescent ~ becoming liquid, or having a tendency to become liquid.

  2. Lately I’ve been eyeing this company and its tiny little getaway rental homes, and then a friend posted that they offer Artist Fellowships. Thought I’d share in case you too could use a little quiet time in the woods.

  3. There’s a wonderful short piece by David Sedaris in the most recent Poets & Writers about weird things people say to the author at book signings. I can’t link to it, since it’s in print only, but he tells a similar story in this YouTube video that starts off with the very-Sedaris line: “sometimes things happen and I don’t know what to do with my face.”

  4. One of the reasons I love fiction: “There are no laws for the novel. There never have been, nor can there ever be.” —Doris Lessing

  5. 3 Things You Need to *Finally* Write Your Book - I recently published this free webinar for anyone who’s struggling to write their novel or memoir. Check it out. Tell a friend.

  6. I’ve often contended that, as writers, part of our job is to stare into space and ponder things. Personally, I love swinging in my hammock and staring up at the trees, so I’m excited to share that science has my back on this one. A study published in the Journal of of Experimental Psychology shows that free-floating thinking can unlock creativity.

  7. Finally got out to see “Nope” this week and I have no idea what that movie was about. I’m not alone, but then some critics loved it. Have you seen it? What did you think. Drop your thoughts in the comments below.

  8. I long ago gave up trying to keep track of my TBR pile. Books swim freely in my home and I usually have three or four going at any given time. But the folks on TikTok are not going down so easily. Check out #tbrjar. While I admire the instinct to organize, I can’t help thinking these kids have a little too much time on their hands.

Happy writing, my friends,

April

PS - The writers out there know: you gotta read.

I'm not sure I know what Nope was about either but I loved it. I loved the performances and the cinematography and the weirdness. I'm always attracted to art that tires to do something big and ends up a little messy and imperfect.

Maybe in part it was about filmmaking itself, about the difficulty of getting what's in your imagination onto the screen (or page).
