I come from scientists and atheists...

Voluntary public shaming for writers, an awesome job opportunity, and why people don't eat ostrich eggs.

I come from scientists and atheists...

Here are eight great things worthy of our attention this week:

  1. For all you nature-loving writers out there doing the digital nomad thing, you should check out this job opportunity and promise me that if you get hired, you’ll send me regular postcards (or the digital equivalent) so I can live vicariously.

  2. Sunday is Father’s Day and, proud daughter that I am, I’d like to take this opportunity to give my dad the best gift I can think of: a plug for his newly published third book, The Worldwide Adventures of a Helicopter Pilot. If you have a dad (or anyone in your life) who loves adventurous tales of flying, pick this one up. You can thank me later.

  3. Ear Candy (that’s almost on theme for Father’s Day): Penelope Scott’s ode to the patriarchy, “Rät” (inspired by Elon Musk - kinda). It starts with the line: “I come from scientists and atheists and white men who kill God” and just gets saucier from there, but don’t click the link if you have a problem with F-bombs.

  4. This quote from Joyce Carol Oates: “I learned long ago that being Lewis Carroll was infinitely more exciting than being Alice.”

  5. If you’re having trouble hitting your deadlines, and you happen to be in Tokyo, and you don’t mind a little public shaming, you can visit the Manuscript Cafe where they will check in on you and (to the extent requested) shame you into working harder. If you leave before hitting your goal for the day, they put your name up on the wall for everyone to see. Whatever works.

  6. This guy bought a copy of his own book online and when it arrived he realized it was the signed copy he had given to his neighbor. Filed under: awkward.

  7. When you publish a novel set on an ostrich farm, people tend to send you cool ostrich-related things they find on the internet. This one, from my sis, answers the burning question: why don’t people eat ostrich eggs?

  8. I love this newsletter by Anne Muhlethaler, The Mettā View. Every time I see it in my inbox I open it with the intention of scanning it and every time I get sucked in, reading the whole thing from start to finish. I love her perspectives on marketing and mindfulness. You can sign up for it at her website.

(Credit where it’s due: items 4 and 5 came from Michael Levin, who I’ve been working with on things like this press release promoting The Scribbling Buddha newsletter. Tell a friend!)

Happy writing, my friends,

April
